Fill in the Blank
6. Music keeps me from being a grumpy jerk

7. If I wasn’t a musical artist I’d be Ya’ stumped me…really.   Oh, I could have a small food stand somewhere in Mexico or a warm place with a beach where I would serve up the stuff I like to cook (tacos, black-eyed peas, collard greens, eggplant, vegetarian food, popcorn & M&M’S) and tequila.

8. My favorite all-time music video is Wow, don’t think I’ve watched them in a very long time…Does Stax Records’ “Respect Yourself” qualify?
9. If I could have a super power it would be to fly because it would be too cool!  I mean it’s flying!
10. Peace, Love, and Happiness should change to Oh…I really love these 3.

Short Answer
11. Musicianship means:  Being present, in the music.

 12. If I could convey one perfect thought or sentiment through one perfect song it would be:  Well, I’m going with a Mavis Staples song.  She changed my life after seeing her perform a tribute to Mahalia Jackson at U of Washington a few years ago.  The song is “If You’re Ready (Come Go With Me).”  Some of the lines are “…Love is the only transportation, to where there’s total communication/If you’re ready, come go with me/Feel  you’re able, take me by the hand, ya’ll/No disaster/Will ever enter there/No wars, uh huh, would ever be declared/No economical exploitation and no political domination…“  Peace, Love, and Happiness.  I love this song!  Imagine if we all were happy and believing in all the good we can have.  Pretty damn cool!

13. If I could change one thing about myself it would be:  I’m working on always being present and not listening to the negative talk I sometimes have in my head.

14. Wild Card!  I just bought tickets to see Mavis Staples & Booker T. at the Paramount!  I cannot wait to see these two together again!  It’s my favorite era of music.  I would fall over if Aretha walked out on stage and/or Candi Staton, Tina Turner…oh holy hell on a biscuit, just imagining such a thing my heart is racing!

I’d like to walk into venues and see all women playing on a regular basis and not be surprised.  I think musicians should be paid a type of welfare, like [in] Paris, to be able to do their art and make a good living here in the U.S.  Or we should just be paid more, period.  Where are all the good promoters, anyway?

I think there should be a kind of child care system set up for women who are musicians and have children (or men who have them for that matter).
Really, there should just be child care system in this country all together.  Community is important, I am being taught.  I’m really happy I moved to Austin.  I feel blessed and not so witty this morning.  That’s alright.  Life is good!

15. The most important thing to me RIGHT NOW is:  Believing in all the great possibilities.

Lisa Marshall’s favorite all-time video!

Editor’s Note:   Originally performed by the Staple Singers.
